7 years ago, the first CDC Block Parties were hosted in August, on National Night Out. Becky Koether started these block parties, which have become an annual event. What made her start this project?
“Originally, I thought of the block parties as a way for neighbors to get to know each other, maybe build connection and a sociable, friendly culture. I really love traditions and thought this could become one.
I also had read a bit about how when neighbors get to know each other the neighborhoods become safer. As I got involved in the newly started neighborhood watch program in BF, and then learned a bit about National Night Out, it seemed like a great way to also connect community leaders and public servants with the people in the community.
Ultimately I wanted to create a tradition of celebration of community on my own block with my neighbors and extend that throughout the city.”
We’re so thankful that Becky started these parties and hope they continue building healthy relationships for years to come!
